After hearing that a multiple listing service website was serving up malware to visitors, security consultant Matt Cohen took a look at the websites of the top 50 largest MLSs by subscriber count and top 50 largest brokers by transaction volume.
He found that 28 percent of the MLS sites were on old or insecure Web server platforms and therefore in need of an upgrade or patch. Nearly half, 46 percent, of the broker sites were similarly insecure.
Cohen, chief technologist for Clareity, tied the flaws not to the firms’ tech “geeks” but rather to management shortcomings such as not formalizing organizational security policies and not putting security requirements in place with vendors in their contracts.
