Inflation, which hit a 40-year high of 9.1 percent in July 2022, is, thankfully, not nearly what it used to be. As of September 2024, it fell to about 2.1 percent — its lowest level since early 2021.

But that doesn’t mean that prices are exactly comfortable either. Interest rates have risen yet again after briefly dipping down, and consumers are still looking for ways to make their dollar go further.

Unfortunately, inflation has impacted some of the country’s most affordable retailers, too. Dollar Tree recently announced plans to shutter nearly 1,000 stores in the next few years after posting a fourth-quarter loss. The retailer cited inflation, a decrease in SNAP benefits and its acquisition of the embattled Family Dollar chain in 2015 as reasons for the loss.

The competition to win listings today is also fierce, with agents outnumbering homes for sale in the U.S., causing them to pinch pennies even more. As of January 2024, there were about 1 million listings compared to 1.49 million National Association of Realtors (NAR) members registered at the end of February 2024, according to the real estate trade organization. Many agents have also faced a market cooldown and less business over the last few months as buyers became deterred by rising mortgage rates and home prices.

But even with rising prices and fewer Dollar Trees, real estate agents can still find deals at dollar stores that may come in handy for fall-inspired stagings, showings or open houses — from furniture and décor to the necessary bottle of hand sanitizer — without breaking the bank.
