On this edition of “Keeping It Real,” a recurring podcast series on Inman, Peter Lorimer discusses the importance of gratitude.

The first step to winning in real estate is realizing that you’ve already won.

All roads to success start with gratitude. People all over the country are talking about gratitude and thankfulness this week, and I think it’s a worthy conversation we should carry on throughout the year.

It’s about perspective.

If you woke up in the United States, you’ve already won. I get that there are a million different levels of this and that some people are waking up with insurmountable grief and many other things.

But if your eyes opened in a warm, safe bed in the United States, and you’re reading this on a computer, phone or other device — you’ve won. Be thankful.

And starting your day with that sort of gratitude is going to allow you to attack the rest of the day with an attitude that differentiates you from the competition. This attitude fuels your business. When you start your day like this, you will begin to ask yourself “What can I contribute?” instead of “What can I take?”

You’ll begin to fill rooms with positivity and sincerity, and that stuff sticks. Negativity sucks all of the energy out of a room and leaves a strong, bitter aftertaste. Positivity fuels. Aim to be the person in the room that exudes gratitude and authenticity. Aim to serve.

One of the best ways we can serve our clients is by knowing our stuff. Researching, offering predictions, consuming data whenever we can. This gives us that streetwise mentality.

And that, coupled with a trust-filled relationship, is something a computer can never compete with. It’s the magical elixir. Listen to this podcast for more.
