When Beau Beardslee of First Team Real Estate Agents was an infantryman in the Army, he served in a combat zone in Iraq. Part of his job over there was to knock on doors — not to sell houses, but to search for terrorists. “I was able to capture some of the worst terrorists in Iraq by going door to door and searching room to room” he explained.
Today, Beardslee takes that same tenacious and thorough approach to his real estate business. He still knocks on doors, this time to answer questions and find new clients, and he’s going to explain how the lessons he learned as a soldier apply to his thriving real estate business in a special session at Inman Connect San Francisco, July 17 through 20 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square.
“The whole deployment shaped my adult life forever,” he said. “If you’re in war, you can’t capture the territory with actual boots on the ground; it’s why the entire military supports the infantry. And that’s my whole thing: Whatever your ‘boots on the ground’ is, going door to door and doing that grunt work will win you the land.” (Or the client, in this case.)
Beardslee has been able to double his real estate business every year in the four years since he started his new life as an agent, and he attributes a lot of his success to his willingness to do jobs and take on tasks that other agents just don’t want to do. “A lot of door-knocking, a lot of handwritten notes, a lot of open houses,” he explained. “It’s just grunt work. But when you roll up your sleeves and get out there, I think you’re going to be better served by getting in front of people toe-to-toe rather than waiting for a lead to come in from Zillow.”
Post-military, Beardslee has adopted a new uniform, but he says his mentality and approach to real estate is very similar to what he learned as a soldier: Do whatever it takes to win. He’ll go over what else the military taught him about real estate at Inman Connect San Francisco this summer; come and join his boot camp!
