Niche.com provides thousands of reviews, polls and data on schools throughout the nation, which are then used to rank the top New York City-area public school districts, basing it on student and parent reviews, state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores and teacher quality.
This year, acclaimed institutions in the Empire State, New Jersey and Connecticut made the cut.
Jericho Union Free
Jericho Union Free School District in Oyster Bay Town, New York, is ranked as the top district in both the NYC metro and entire state. There are five schools and almost 3,000 students in the district, which scored an A+ in all categories except student culture and diversity (B+) and sports and fitness (A).

Rye City
Located in Rye, New York, Rye City School District includes five schools and 3,303 students. Rye City is second in both the NYC metro and the state. The district scored an A+ in all categories except student culture and diversity, for which it scored a B-.
Millburn Township Schools
At no. 3, Millburn Township Schools in Millburn, New Jersey, includes seven schools and almost 5,000 students. It’s ranked second overall in the Garden State, with a 3.9/5 combined rating from parents and students.
New Canaan
Connecticut’s New Canaan School District in New Canaan, Connecticut, has five schools and over 4,000 students, placing fourth among NYC Metro school districts and second overall in the state of Connecticut. New Canaan scored an A+ in all categories, besides a noticeable C+ in student culture and diversity.
Chappaqua Central
Chappaqua Central School District in New Castle Town, New York, has six schools and nearly 4,000 students. The district ranks third best in the state of New York, with a 4/5 combined rating from parents and students.
Great Neck Public Schools
In North Hempstead Town, New York, Great Neck Public Schools holds 10 schools and 6,639 students. Great Neck placed sixth in the NYC metro and fourth overall in New York State. The district scored an A+ in all categories except a B+ in both sports and fitness and student culture and diversity.
Scarsdale Union Free
Scarsdale Union Free School District is ranked seventh in the metro and fifth overall in the state of New York, with seven schools and 4,801 students. The district scored an A+ in academics, teacher quality and health and safety.
Wilton Public Schools
Ranked no. 8, Wilton Public Schools in Wilton, Connecticut, has four schools and 4,278 students. Wilton is the third best overall in the state of Connecticut, scoring at least an A grade in all categories but student culture and diversity, for which it scored a C.
Montgomery Township School District
Placing fourth overall in the state of New Jersey, Montgomery Township School District in Skillman, New Jersey, is comprised of five schools and 4,789 students. The district scored a 3.9/5 combined rating from parents and students.
Edgemont Union Free School District
Edgemont Union Free has just three schools and 1,907 students in Greenburgh Town, New York. It’s ranked sixth in the state, with at least an A score in all categories except sports and fitness, for which it scored a B.
