A new report from Trulia finds McMansions — big plots of land dotted with similarly styled homes — are losing appeal in some areas of the country. Austin, Houston and San Antonio all posted a 10-year decrease in home premium costs. The premium for a McMansion in Houston was reported at 124.5 percent for a $296,975 median priced home in 2006. That same sized home today goes for a median price of $351,851 in Houston, which is a 107.2 percent premium. Between 2012 and 2016, the premium fell 31.3 percent.
A staple in Houston’s Museum District will soon be adding to its appeal for locals. The current owners of La Colombe d’Or Hotel, Hines real estate firm and TIAA Global Asset Management are working together to develop the Residences at La Colombe d’Or, a luxury residence tower.
Apartment List’s latest Renter Survey studied renter satisfaction across major metros, grading factors such as affordability, crime, jobs and weather. Houston scored a B- in renter satisfaction, lifted by the job market, nonexistent state income taxes, affordability and schools. Nevertheless, safety, weather, commute and recreational activities were viewed as mediocre by local renters.
