According to the League of American Bicyclists, Chicago ranks as the no. 6 U.S. city with the greenest commuters. Not including those who drive to work, Chicago has the highest number of commuters who take transit, followed by walking and biking.
Chicago does outpace New York– the no. 1 ranked metro– in bike commuters, and Philadelphia– the no. 5 ranked metro– in transit commuters. Overall, 36.6 percent of Chicago’s commuters bike, walk or take transit.
Like most other cities– other than New York, DC and Boston, the majority of Chicago’s commuters drive to work.
When considered by state instead of metro, unsurprisingly District of Columbia ranks as the greenest.
