Overall the city of Los Angeles doesn’t rank as a top walkable locale, but it does feature neighborhoods that are very pedestrian friendly.
According to analysis from Walk Score, the city has a walk score of 64, ranking it as the 13th most walkable large city. However, in and around the city’s downtown five neighborhoods have a walk score of 90 or higher.
Downtown itself is considered one of the most walkable with a score of 93. The area also has the highest transit score (90) among the 94 neighborhoods examined.
MacArthur Park (93), central Hollywood (93), Wilshire Center-Koreatown (90) and Westlake (90) are also considered very walkable for residents.
Receiving walkscores ranging from 86 to 89 were the neighborhoods of Mid-city west, Pico Union, east Hollywood, west Los Angeles and Hollywood’s studio district.
Focusing only on biking, the Congress North neighborhood scored the highest, 76. This area surrounds the University of Southern California campus. Nine other neighborhoods have a bike score of 70 or higher.
Walk Score notes the city has “some bike infrastructure,” but only a bike score of 56.
In terms of transit the city obtained a score of 51. According to Walk Score, LA has 162 bus, six rail, two subway and four light rail lines. LA also has roughly 250 car shares.
