Priceonomics recently released a report based on the findings of the American Community Survey, which found the top cities in the U.S. most likely to have people between the ages of 18 and 39 living with roommates. The Roommate Index is an estimate of this population, and unsurprisingly, the top cities are considered some of the most expensive for rent.
According the estimate, Arlington snagged the no. 2 spot and Washington, D.C. wasn’t too far behind at no. 5. The cities were ranked to have 23 percent and 21 percent, respectively, of their populations within the age bracket living with roommates. San Francisco was ranked as the no. 1 city.
The population of renters between 30 and 39 years old with renters is lower, and San Francisco again steals the pie. This time with a higher pull with 20 percent of its 30 to 39 population living with roommates, and the no. 2 city, Portland, having only 14 percent of its population within this bracket.
Arlington made it no. 3 on the list with 13 percent, and Washington, D.C. came in no. 8 with 11 percent of its population in this group.
Graphiq broke down mortgages in Arlington, showing the city is a costly one compared to the rest of the state and the nation. The population of renters over 30 with roommates could mean a lot of things, but the high cost of living could most certainly have a big impact.
