Decorating details that make a difference

When designing a home, the big decisions usually stress us out the most. Should we tear that wall down? Is this the best flooring for the entire house? Will that sofa be the right statement piece for the entryway?

But little things can have a big impact, too. From cabinet pulls to accessories, details can make or break a space. Here are three small touches that deserve to be celebrated.

Take a look at this space. What do you notice first? What makes the biggest impact?

I love the flooring, the open spaces and those perfectly white walls, but the little bottles lined up like soldiers really strike me too. A simple collection displayed en masse makes a statement about the homeowners’ personalities and injects the room with life.

Think accent

Let’s say you’ve completed a room, and everything is just the way you wanted it. It’s brand new, sparkling and shiny, but seems to be missing a little something.

Take this room, for example: beautiful design, luxurious materials and proper use of space. Now take out the trays on the nightstands, the blanket and the pillows. The scheme would turn sterile — those yellow pieces make the room.

The little things make a big statement

Whenever I visit someone’s home for the first time, I am drawn instinctively to the house numbers. They are tiny in comparison to the home facade or even the front door, but they are always the first thing I look for.

House numbers provide a first glimpse into the homeowner’s personality. Are they whimsical? Are they fun? Are they classy? Do they have an edge?

Indoors, cabinet pulls and knobs are the equivalent of exterior house numbers. There is a limit to how creative you can get with your cabinetry for resale purposes, but cabinet pulls? You have no limit. You can go as personal and fun as you want.
