The Skinny: Across from Manhattan’s famed River House on the far eastern end of 52nd Street, The Campanille has welcomed many wealthy residents, including reclusive actress Greta Garbo, H.J. Heinz, and members of the Rothschild banking clan, drawn by spectacular river views and the tony Sutton area address.
Before the construction of East River Drive in the late 1930s, the building also boasted a private dock on the riverfront so the yachting set could travel to and from their city apartments without ever setting foot in the street. Once the highway was installed, the formerly public spaces at the base of the building — believed to have been used as a speakeasy during Prohibition — were converted into private apartments, with enormous windows and private entrances.
This particular space, the largest such apartment, enjoys 5,000 square feet of interior space and a spectacular treed garden measuring 6,000 square feet. Currently in the midst of a halted renovation, the apartment is offered at $5.75 million, with $7,350 in monthly maintenance charges. While the place provides a blank slate for buyers, potential purchasers might be concerned about the road noise spilling over into the garden.
