The number of people in the U.S. who own smartphones jumped 10 percent to 82.2 million in the three months through July, according to a report by metrics company comScore Inc. released today.
That’s 35.1 percent of the 234 million people 13 and up who use mobile devices in the U.S.
Google’s Android platform continued to lead in market share among smartphones, at 41.8 percent for the three-month period ending in July — an increase of 5.4 percentage points from the three-month period ending in April.
At the same time, Apple’s iPhone platform rose to a 27 percent market share. The platform first rose to second in market share in the three-month period ending in April, with Research in Motion’s BlackBerry platform dropping to third.
The BlackBerry platform’s market share has continued to erode since then, dropping 4 percentage points to 21.7 percent in the three months ending in July — just over half the market share held by Android-equipped smartphones.
Microsoft and Symbian both saw their market shares decrease as well, to 5.7 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively.
