In cities with more than 5,000 families moving, Bronx, N.Y., had the highest percentage of growth in 2009, according to a report by do-it-yourself moving company U-Haul International Inc.
Among the top 25 cities, Bronx had the highest share of growth at 17.22 percent. Houston, Texas, ranked second with 10.8 percent growth, followed closely by Portland, Ore., at 10.16 percent growth.
The company’s annual migration trends report was based on more than 1 million U-Haul one-way truck transactions between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009.
"The report, reflective of growth patterns in the United States during 2009, was compiled based on nationwide trends in cities of all sizes and reflects communities with more than 5,000 families moving in or out of the area," said John "J.T." Taylor, U-Haul’s president of Phoenix operations, where the company is headquartered.
"Growth cities were then determined by calculating the percentage of inbound moves vs. outbound moves for each area."
Dallas, Texas, ranked fourth on the list (9.48 percent); Los Angeles was fifth (7.87 percent), and Indianapolis was sixth (6.88 percent).
Florida’s Tampa (6.76 percent) ranked seventh and Orlando (6.43 percent) ranked eighth. Charlotte, N.C., ranked ninth (5.84 percent). Van Nuys, Calif., was close behind at 5.8 percent in the 10th spot.
U-Haul was founded in 1945 and has 15,800 locations across the U.S. and in 10 Canadian provinces.
