Real estate blog pioneer dies

Florida real estate agent John Mudd passed away of natural causes at his Tampa home last month. He was 32 years old and well known within the real estate blogosphere.

Police found Mudd dead on his living room couch after receiving phone calls from Mudd’s co-workers who said he had not been at work for several days, according a report in Tampa Bay Newspapers’ Pinellas Park Beacon.

Officer Scott Mitchell told the newspaper that Mudd died sometime between July 17 and 26.

Mudd lived with his grandmother, who thought he was sleeping and apparently continued to feed him even though he had been dead for several days. Police said there was a strong odor coming from the residence when the elderly woman answered the door.

Mudd, an agent with Exit Suncoast Realty, launched his first real estate blog, “Inside Real Estate Journal,” in early 2003. Mudd also was an active blogger at Blogcritics.org and PropertyMaven.com, launched this year by Know More Media.

Mudd specialized in the sale of luxury, waterfront and golf course homes and condos throughout Florida’s Tampa Bay area. He was a member of the National Association of Realtors, Florida Association of Realtors, the National Association of Residential Real Estate Investment Advisors, the Gerson Lehrman Group Real Estate Council, Emerge Florida and Leadership Florida.

Inman News first met Mudd in May 2004, while researching an article about real estate blogging, and Mudd at one time was a guest writer for the Inman News Blog. He was an outspoken innovator who wasn’t afraid to voice his opinion and try new things.

“I will miss John Mudd. The real estate world is a fragmented hodgepodge of characters. John was one of those passionate, innovative Realtors who keeps the industry exciting and interesting for the rest of us,” said Inman News Publisher Bradley Inman.

Mudd’s real estate Web site, HomeInTampaBay.com, is no longer live.
