What happens when a Manhattan editor takes off her Jimmy Choos and puts on her hard hat?
The result will be “Diary of a Flipper,” a weekly column written by Alison Rogers and published by Inman News. The first column is scheduled to appear Friday, Sept. 9.
Part Candace Bushnell, part Bob Vila, “Diary of a Flipper” tells the story of an office worker (or to use the column’s phrase, “desk monkey”) who enters the real estate frontier to try to make it big.
“After two years writing about the real estate business, I decided to go into it,” says Rogers. “I was the founding editor of the New York Post‘s Saturday real estate section, which is read by half a million people. Now I want to take a national audience along for a new ride.”
The column has three basic themes: 1) the adventure of leaving an office job and starting a new business; 2) the “Money Pit” details of flipping, where we learn no renovation is as simple as it first seems; and 3) the appearance of sexy and scandalous characters from the world of New York-area real estate.
“The characters divide into ‘colorful’ and ‘more colorful,'” Rogers said. “There’s the former reality-TV star who’s started hawking condos; the sharp-tongued TV designer who’s actually a lamb in person; and the broker who gives insider deals to his favorite maitre’d.”
Rogers graduated from Harvard University, summa cum laude. She has spoken at the Learning Annex Real Estate Wealth Expo at the Javits Center, the Harlem Home Fair, the Brooklyn Home Expo, and Real Estate Connect. Television appearances include Fox 5’s Good Day New York, CnnFn’s “Open House,” and recurring spots on NY1.
