Real estate journalism contest deadline nears

The National Association of Real Estate Editors today announced that its Journalism Competition deadline for entries is approaching next month. This competition is open to all professional journalists who have covered real estate and home and design in the past year in print, broadcast or online media.

Entries must be postmarked by Feb. 5, 2005. The 20 contest categories include writing, editing and broadcast work pertaining to architectural design, construction, the environment, housing, commercial real estate, urban growth and land use, as well as the business of real estate finance and investment.

The overall individual winner will be awarded a minimum of $1,250. The NAREE competition offers a total of $6,250 in cash awards.

Journalists age 30 and under are eligible to vie for the James D. Carper Award for Best Entry by a Young Journalist, which comes with a $250 cash award. The contest includes 11 categories for individual work and nine categories recognizing team work. “Best Freelance Report” is one of three the new categories this year.

The National Association of Real Estate Editors Journalism Awards Program has recognized excellence in reporting, writing and editing since 1949. The entry fee is $75 for nonmembers. NAREE members may enter one category entry without charge.

The competition is judged by journalism faculty of the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Winners will be invited to attend the awards ceremony at NAREE’s annual conference, “Capital Ideas,” June 2-5, 2004, in Washington, D.C.

The 600-member organization, one of the oldest and most prestigious journalism groups operating today, was founded in 1929. Its leaders include journalists from the Arizona Republic, Philadelphia Inquirer, San Diego Union-Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Wall Street Journal, Newsday, Inman News, New Orleans Times Picayune, Chicago Tribune, New York Post, Newsday, The Washington Post, Real Estate Media Inc. and other organizations.
