Advice for the Rookie Realtor

Dear Rookie,

Up until recently I taught the “newbies” at my company. I’ve become very discouraged by the lack of real “education” that these people are receiving–as you have noted, the real cost of business, the planning that it takes, etc.–that I couldn’t with any good conscience do it anymore.

It took me six months to make my first dime, and it was barely $150 by the time the past ARs and bills were paid. I succeeded only because of a lack of mental sanity and a lot of guidance from my fiancé. Would I do it again? Not sure, but hang in there!

Dear Rookie,

This story cannot be true. If someone is putting that much effort to the task, they are going to do business. If not, then they must be totally incompetent in their technique.

Dear Rookie,

Welcome to real estate. In the 21 years I’ve been a Realtor there hasn’t been an easy time to begin. When I started, the interest rates were 18.5 percent (just like putting your house on a Visa card) and 15 out of the 16 new agents in my Coldwell Banker training class didn’t make it. You have to want it so bad that it’s all you think about and you must believe the service you offer is worth much more than what people pay you. If it were easy, everyone would have their license. Good luck.
